But the rivalry path can actually be good to some characters, as it's a reevaluation of their life without you and them hating each other. The rivalry path was so difficult because I knew in DA:O if you lost favor with a companion, they left. I don't hate the way it's done but sometimes it's Just strange. I say this Idea is "Mine" because i've seen It somewhere a long time ago and agree with It. I guess one bar would change acording to ingame choices and the other would change acording to personal dialogue choices. One would be something like friends/rival and the other would be How they view the main character, they may have problems with, let's say Hawke, but they still think he is alright. "My" way to Deal with this would be something like having two bars/scores. Hot take: i kinda dislike the friend/rival system, wait hear me out now, the thing with being someone's rival is that you do stuff people don't like, Fine, but most of the time getting rival points means most of the time You are being openly hostile and offensive to the person which is not a flaw in itself but then the same rivaled companions go and say they fight for You at the end, You Just gotta have maxed friendship/ rivalry.Īs Far as i'm aware that is How It Works most of the time. If you want people in your life you got invest time in them even if you don’t always agree. Dragon age 2 does a good job at relationships being a two way street. Then we have the Rivalry system that can take them in a new direction with a respect for Hawke as person rather than a friend. A quest in each act (or after a main mission) getting us further to the companions goal like Merril and her Eluvian, Fenris with Danarius and Aveline with the Kirkwall Guard. What I hope Dragon age 4 does instead of having companions apart of our story do something more like Hawke, who becomes apart of theirs while still moving the main narrative. We meet Isabela who says “I need your help”. I think this gives a more personal stake rather than meeting Leliana in a tavern with “I’ll help you save the world”. When we first meet most of the Kirkwall gang they don’t offer their services to Hawke, they ask for help. Each companion has a problem or a goal but it’s not directly solved by one quest. What Dragon age 2 does so well is we get several quests with the characters rather than a one time problem to be solved. We get a nice conversation or cutscene but I don’t feel active enough in their life. In Dragon Age Origins and Inquisition we get a companion quests which usually gives us an insight to the character and their motives but after the quest is completed I feel like I’ve ticked a box.
I have just finished playing the Dragon Age series on my canon run and Dragon age 2 really does companions better than the other two games. This subreddit is RES Nightmode Compatible
